Guests are also welcome to experience additional existing art installations in the downtown Glendale area.

Exhibition Information

Translating Transitions #2 by Marilyn Lowey, visible at street level in Suite 140 of 101 N. Brand, consists of large LED light tubes arranged in various angles and heights on the floor relaying a live video feed of a candle’s flame. With this installation, Lowey questions the difference between what the eye sees and the brain understands. She integrates state of the art technology to reproduce light from an analog source, while at the same time referencing the history of light utilized in art.

Mylar Forest by Jennifer Wolf, also visible in Suite 140, transforms the gallery into a shimmering, flickering, reflective forest. The dazzling installation engages ideas about nature, display and consumerism while reflecting both the urban surrounding and the viewer within it.

Recycled Trees by the Glendale Woodturners Guild (GWG), will occupy Suite 220 on the second floor of 101 N. Brand. This installation will display the work of several of the GWG members. From bowls to vases to decorative works of art, the pieces will feature varieties of wood from the exotic to recycled scrap wood.

Bouble Vision by David Lovejoy transforms suite 240 on the second floor of 101 N. Brand into a fantastical installation of hundreds of magnifying glasses that catch and reflect light. The spectacular installation presents viewers with a meditation on optical illusion, transformation, and pleasure.

Opening Reception

Punch by David John Attyah and Utopia by Mark Gens occupy a set of display constructions in windows along Broadway Blvd in the100 N. Brand Blvd. building. Gens’ work is a series of 3D wall constructions referring to models of sleek modernist skyscrapers and a utopian ideal of urban architecture. Displayed against the backdrop of the vacant, deconstructed bank at 100 N. Brand, the sculptures reveal the conflict between (socio-economic) fantasy and reality. Attyah’s mixed-media wall installations consisting of large-scale etchings, cut paper, and gilded frames reflects on male fears of invincibility and fantasies of vulnerability and ask why men create themselves via aggression.

Taylor Tschider’s Has That Always Been There? Consists of a series of humongous glitter-encrusted globule formations positioned at the entrance to the 100 N. Brand Blvd. building. These optically sumptuous and strange objects reference a fascination with opulence, spectacle, and awkward form. The work takes on an even more curious tone when viewed against the building’s empty excavated backdrop.

Tomo Isoyama’s Lucky Mandala, transforms two windows of the100 N. Brand Blvd. building into large circular meditations on consumerism and identity. Using imagery culled from numerous pop culture sources, Isoyama asks viewers to consider how cultural particularities inform one’s participation in commerce and the marketplace.

Closing Reception

For Protoslag 2011, Kaminski and Mason present sculptures exploring dystopic visions of youth culture. Visitors are welcome to come and interact with their large pyramidal swing set, futuristic flat-screen scanning bed, and other multimedia works.

With Consideration & Distribution, Anna Magnuson creates an installation out of objects given to her in exchange for drawings. Participate in the project by bringing an object of value to Suite 230 in the 101 N. Brand building. Exchange this object for an original drawing.

David O. Johnson’s mysterious neon packing box sculpture transform the inside of 132 N. Brand Blvd., a former yogurt shop, highlighting its position as a site with rich potential.

Michael Ano’s You Didn’t Think I Could Run a Mile in Six Minutes compiles footage from the artist and other people running around the Los Angeles region, creating a hypnotic portrait of bodies passing through space. This video will screen in GATE’s projection room in Suite 1 in the Glendale City Center Building.

On April 22, 2011, from 5-10PM Glendale Area Temporary Exhibitions (GATE) will celebrate the opening of new exhibitions in empty storefronts in downtown Glendale. Guests are also welcome to experience three additional existing art installations by Srboohie Abajian, Jeremy J. Quinn, and P. Williams in the downtown Glendale area. Due to overwhelming interest from the Glendale community, these three additional exhibitions will remain installed in their current locations past their previous April closing date.

For Protoslag 2011, Kaminski and Mason present sculpture exploring dystopic visions of youth culture in the future. Visitors are welcome to come and interact with their large pyramidal swing set, futuristic flat-screen scanning bed, and other multimedia works.

With Consideration & Distribution, Magnuson creates an installation out of objects given to her in exchange for drawings. Participate in the project by bringing an object of value or particular interest to the opening in exchange for a drawing. For more information visit firstconsideration.blogspot.com.

David O. Johnson’s mysterious neon packing box sculptures will occupy the inside of 132 N. Brand, transforming a former yogurt shop into a play of light and the ambiguity of the scene, marking arrival or departure. Johnson’s installation will open April 29th.

Michael Ano’s You Didn’t Think I Could Run a Mile in Six Minutes compiles footage from the artist and others running around the Los Angeles region, creating a hypnotic portrait of bodies passing through space. This video will screen in GATE’s projection room in Suite 240 of the Glendale City Center Building.

Art exhibits in windows of unleased businesses a quick take on talent in town.

By Terri Martin
March 18, 2011

Unifying city Art exhibits in windows of unleased businesses a quick take on talent in town.

The Glendale Area Temporary Exhibitions Project (GATE), along with the city of Glendale and local property owners, has contrived a symbiotic relationship that promotes local emerging and established artists and brings beauty and culture to downtown Glendale by replacing “for lease” signs in temporarily vacant business spaces with thought-provoking, smile-inspiring artworks.

These exhibitions began in December with GATE’s premier exhibition, “Increments,” located at 101 N. Brand Blvd., which livened up several empty suites with an exhibition of sculptures by Cynthia Minet — oversize animals formed by recycled plastics accented with LED lights, titled “Unsustainable Creatures;” Dillon Markey’s exploded scale copper wire self-portrait sculpture; and half a dozen more artists’ presentations.

The next suite of exhibits has been installed in three different locations downtown, spreading the innovative idea of “public art space” into new corners. Three seasoned artists enhance drive-by views.

Architectural designer and artist Jeremy J. Quinn’s street-level multimedia billboard installation piece, titled “Tomorrow”, is at 116 E. Wilson Ave., and energizes the block with an intent to stimulate a consciousness about the future. Bright yellow letters spelling out “TOMORROW” fill street-front windows to inspire diligent caution in passers-by.

Srboohie Abajian’s thoughtfulness about the responsibility of an artist to thread great stylized technique, together with an expression of the essence of the subject matter, is apparent in the presentation in suite 180 on the Broadway side of the building at 101 N. Brand Blvd. Abajian’s drawings and paintings, installed in between and behind fabric panels, speak clearly about their substance, just as the words of a good poet relay their own drama and emotion. Diaphanous fabric panels are hung at various depths. Paper hands hang randomly between veils, creating a mystical fog that shrouds Abajian’s line drawings on the furthest panels. The exhibit is appropriately titled, “Getting It.”

Across the street at 50 W. Broadway, P. Williams displays a graphics sculpture in the window, drawing attention to his creative ability to give dimension to the graphics medium, which relates to viewers who recognize the elements used by the artist. The artist fuses together cardboard storage and file boxes of various sizes and caricaturizes them in black and white. The animation brings to mind a monopoly board. Titled “Anti-Monumental,” the exhibit binds the utility of tools used by businesses to the GATE concept of transforming public spaces into points of artistic expression, creating a visual connection to the business community, and adding value and purpose to currently unleased space. It is good communication.

The GATE Project is “glass-half-full” proactivity that offsets what might otherwise be disheartening voids in downtown Glendale. I love this project. It is a paradigm of opportunity for Glendale residents and works like community glue that speaks to the unity of the city.
